Music Teacher/Music Minister
Position Overview:
Paramus Catholic High School seeks an inspiring music teacher/music minister who is responsible for teaching elective music classes to students in grades nine through twelve. In addition to his/her teaching duties, the music teacher is the music minister for monthly School Masses, Prayer Services, and other school ceremonies (some examples include Junior Ring Ceremony, National Honor Society Induction, Baccalaureate Mass, and Graduation). In conjunction with the Campus Ministry Team and the school’s Administrative Team, this person will work to engage students in various forms of music throughout the school year. The music teacher reports directly to the Fine Arts Coordinator and the Dean of Academics.
General Description:
Under the supervision of the President, Principal, and Vice Principal, the Music Teacher/Music Minister assumes responsibility for the leadership and management of the classes assigned; strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education set forth in our school’s Mission Statement; develops and implements a daily instructional program according to the needs of the students and the established curriculum; maintains accurate records of attendance, scholastic achievement, etc. as required by the school, diocese, and state; establishes positive public relations within and outside the school community; continues professional development.
Due to the nature of the position requiring active participation in the Catholic Mass, the ideal candidate would be an active and practicing Roman Catholic, but others may apply.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and prepares lesson plans to teach assigned elective classes in music to students in grades nine to twelve.
- Uses a variety of music styles/repertoires, both traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the age and music skill levels of the students.
- Teach large group, small group, and individual music classes to students.
- Works with Dean of Academics, Fine Arts Department Coordinator and other staff to plan, rehearse, and direct students in two music programs for the school community each year (Christmas Concert and Spring Concert).
- Plans a balanced music program, and organizes class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction may be accomplished within the allocated time and setting.
- Evaluates each student’s musical growth and contributions to the fine arts performances of the group, allowing all to contribute.
- Works to create and prepare a Liturgical Mass Choir, which is composed of music students, non-music students, faculty, and staff, to celebrate Mass and other forms of prayer at Paramus Catholic.
- Working with the Dean of Campus Ministry and the Vice Principal, the music teacher/music minister will plan all liturgical music for monthly Masses, prayer services, Christmas Pageant, and other liturgical opportunities.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during classes, practices, group and individual rehearsals, and music performances.
- Communicates clearly with parents and school faculty/staff/administration on the progress of individual students, classes, and upcoming performances and liturgical celebrations.
- Maintains, sets up, and breaks down all audio equipment used at Paramus Catholic.
OTHER POSSIBLE DUTIES:
- Music teacher has the possibility of picking up other stipend positions by coordinating one or more of the following:
- Drumline/Marching Band
- Fall Drama Music Coordinator
- Spring Musical Director of Music
- Talent Show
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Minimum of a BA in music or music education (or equivalent with experience).
- Ability to work with musicians at all skill levels
- Strong instrumental skills for working with Concert Band
- Piano accompaniment for choirs and individuals
- Though the ideal applicant is an active and practicing Roman Catholic with experience in Church music, others may apply.
